A behavioral designdriven habit-building app with an IoT smart ring that uses haptic feedback to boost motivation, consistency, and emotional well-being.

A behavioral designdriven habit-building app with an IoT smart ring that uses haptic feedback to boost motivation, consistency, and emotional well-being.

  • 66% of people fail to stick to new habits beyond 3 months.

  • Most habit apps focus only on reminders, ignoring emotional triggers and motivation dips.

  • Existing tools lack real-time, physical reinforcement leaving a gap between intention and action.

The Problem

The Problem

While the habit-forming app market is saturated with trackers and reminders, none combine emotional insights, behavioral science, and real-time haptic feedback from a wearable to address both motivation and consistency.

Design Decisions

Design Decisions

Every design choice was aimed to reduce anxiety and build trust

  • Behavioral Science at Core – Based on B.J. Fogg’s behavior model (motivation + ability + prompt).

  • Calming Visual System – Encourages a positive, non-judgmental environment.

  • Seamless IoT Integration – Data sync between app and ring for effortless tracking.

Framing the right problem

Framing the right problem

To translate research into actionable design direction, I synthesized insights into a clear user persona and mapped out their emotional journey across typical habit-forming experiences.

POV STORY PERSONA 1

Rishi, a 29-year-old marketing manager, needs real-time data and progress tracking for his workouts because he wants to independently customize his fitness routines with precision and without relying on generic AI recommendations.

POV STORY PERSONA 2

Rebecca, a remote-working student who values productivity, needs a way to stay physically active without feeling unproductive, because she associates movement breaks with a loss of control over her academic goals.

Customer Journey Map

Customer journey mapping was used to visualize the users end-to-end experience, highlighting pain points and opportunities.

IDEATE

Imagining Reflective Solutions

Based on the user insights and emotional gaps identified, I framed a set of
How Might We (HMW) questions to guide solution thinking

HMW 1

How might we give quick workout feedback without interrupting what someone’s doing?

HMW 2

How might we help people easily make and follow their own workout plans?

HMW 3

How might we show weekly progress in a way that makes it easy to learn and improve?

HMW 4

How might we fit light physical activity into busy work or study time without being distracting?

PROTOTYPE

Building Intuitive Interfaces

In this phase, the goal was to develop low to high-fidelity prototypes
that reflected the users emotional journey.

TEST

Validating with real users

In the final round of formative testing, a structured 5-act approach was used to evaluate high-fidelity prototypes with users. Key feedback led to meaningful design refinements. Users appreciated the emotional tone, layout clarity, and goal-based navigation. However, several usability gaps were identified
